Remove background takes an image and erases everything behind the subject. The output is always a PNG with a transparent background, ready to drop onto any design, thumbnail, or slide.

## How it works [#how-it-works]

1. Open the tool page.
2. Upload an image.
3. Run. There are no options to configure; the tool detects the subject automatically.
4. Download the PNG cutout.

The output is always PNG because PNG supports transparency. If you need a smaller JPG or WebP afterwards, run the cutout through [Edit image](https://openclip.app/docs/tools/edit-image/) with the Compress operation, keeping in mind that JPG has no transparency and will fill the background.

## What it works best on [#what-it-works-best-on]

Clean subject-background separation gives the best cutouts: product shots, portraits, logos on plain backgrounds. Busy scenes with fine detail (hair against a cluttered background, semi-transparent objects) are harder and may need touch-up in an image editor.

## Watermarks and limits [#watermarks-and-limits]
