Remove background

Remove background takes an image and erases everything behind the subject. The output is always a PNG with a transparent background, ready to drop onto any design, thumbnail, or slide.

Open it at https://openclip.app/tools/remove-background, or press Cmd-K and type "background" or "cutout".

How it works

Open the tool page.
Upload an image.
Run. There are no options to configure; the tool detects the subject automatically.
Download the PNG cutout.

The output is always PNG because PNG supports transparency. If you need a smaller JPG or WebP afterwards, run the cutout through Edit image with the Compress operation, keeping in mind that JPG has no transparency and will fill the background.

What it works best on

Clean subject-background separation gives the best cutouts: product shots, portraits, logos on plain backgrounds. Busy scenes with fine detail (hair against a cluttered background, semi-transparent objects) are harder and may need touch-up in an image editor.

The Pro Background Remover

It is one of the free one-shot tools on the marketing site and runs the removal in your browser, with a choice of replacement background (transparent, white, black, or gray). The in-app tool documented on this page is the workspace version: it runs as a tracked tool job, appears in your Recent runs, and shares the same quota and history as every other in-app tool.

Watermarks and limits

Cutouts are visual output, so free-plan results carry a watermark; paid plans remove it. Runs count against your daily tool quota (10 on free, 500 on paid) and inputs follow your plan's size cap (200 MB free, 2 GB paid). See Tools overview.

Compress, resize, or crop the cutout with Edit image.
Extract a frame from a video first with Thumbnails, then remove its background.
