Editor
Trim, split and cut a clip on its timeline or by its words, add text, shapes, images, video and music, fix the transcript, and cut silences and filler words.
Every Viral Moment has its own editor. Open a clip from the Clips tab of the Content Hub, or go to https://openclip.app/viral-moments/{clip}/edit directly. Quick Captions videos open in the same editor, on the whole video.
The editor fills the screen beside the app's sidebar:
- Top bar: where the clip is, whether your edits are saved, undo and redo, Schedule and Export.
- Library on the left, behind a rail of tabs: Caption presets, Emoji, Bangers, Logo, Words, Insights and Media (the clip and what it draws from). It opens on the presets.
- Viewer in the middle: the clip as it exports, its shape, size and frame rate above it, and play, frame step, the playback speed (0.25× to 2×, the sound's pitch moves with it) and the timecode (hours, minutes, seconds and frames) under it.
- Inspector on the right: the settings of whatever you select on the timeline or the video. The editor opens with the captions selected.
- Timeline along the bottom, and a status bar with the clip's length in seconds and frames.
Fold the library to its rail with the button at the bottom of the rail, hide the inspector with the button at the right of the viewer, or collapse the app's sidebar (click its logo to open it again), to give the viewer more room. Drag the bar above the timeline to make it taller or shorter. Changes save automatically, and the save status in the top bar tells you when your edit is stored.
The timeline
The timeline shows the clip as it plays, one track per part:
- Logo (V6), Captions (V5: each caption page with its words, emphasis and emoji), Bangers (V4), Video (V1: each cut, with its frames) and Sound (A1: its waveform).
- The layers button shows all tracks, adding the speaker cut-out (V3) and the bangers behind the speaker (V2).
The eye beside a track switches the captions, the bangers or the logo off and on, and the speaker beside Sound mutes the whole clip. A banger shows as a solid block while its line is said, and a lighter one while it holds after. Click a clip to select it and set it in the inspector; click a caption page to jump to it. Click or drag on the ruler to move the playhead; the ruler counts in seconds, and in seconds and frames when you zoom in. Zoom with the slider, the plus and minus buttons, or ctrl-scroll (pinch on a trackpad), and press Fit to see the whole clip.
Trim, split and delete
A clip plays a series of cuts: the stretches of the source that stay in it.
- Trim: drag the start or end of a cut. A preview shows the frame you land on, and the rest of the clip closes up or makes room as you drag. Edges snap to the playhead, the other cuts and the bangers; switch snapping off with the magnet, or hold Alt to drag freely.
- Split: press S (or Split) to cut the clip in two at the playhead.
- Delete: select a cut and press Delete or Backspace (or Delete) to take it out and close the gap.
- Right-click a clip on the timeline for its menu: play from its start, split a cut at the playhead, duplicate a layer, or take it out.
- Reset: puts back every cut as the clip was detected, with silence and filler removal off.
The speaker cut-out, the sound and the captions move with every edit, so nothing drifts out of sync. The original AI-detected start and end times are kept, so trimming is never destructive to the source Video.
Keyboard shortcuts
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Space or K | Play and pause |
| Left and Right | Step one frame (ten with Shift) |
| Home and End | Jump to the start or the end |
| S | Split at the playhead |
| Delete or Backspace | Take out what's selected: a cut (closing the gap) or a layer; the captions, bangers or logo are hidden |
| Cmd or Ctrl + Z | Undo (with Shift: redo) |
| Plus and minus | Zoom the timeline in and out |
| \ | Fit the whole clip |
Set what you select
The inspector shows the settings of the selected clip:
- Captions: on or off, the preset (press Change to pick another), the font (press Font for the font picker, on every plan), where they sit, their size, text colour and case, and the list of their words. Click a word to jump to it, or double-click it to fix it.
- A cut: its first and last frame, its length and place on the timeline, Split at playhead and Ripple delete, and its Colour: brightness, contrast and saturation. The speaker cut-out takes the same colour, so bangers stay matched, and a cut you split or trim keeps it.
- Bangers: on or off, their look, how far behind the speaker they sit, the pop-out, and what the clip's bangers say. Bangers need the speaker cut out first: the inspector offers it, and it runs in your browser.
- The logo: on or off, where it sits, its width and opacity.
- Sound: its Volume (0% mutes it, up to 200%), the cut it belongs to and where it plays from. The waveform grows and shrinks with the volume.
Edit by the words
The Words tab lists the clip's transcript, grouped by scene. Words the clip no longer plays are struck through.
- Click a word to play from it.
- Drag across words, then press Cut (or Delete) to take them out of the clip, or Put back to bring cut words back.
- Hover a scene and use its scissors to cut it whole, or its arrow to put it back.
Fix the transcript
Captions render from the clip's transcript, so a misheard word shows up on screen. In the Words tab, double-click a word and retype it, or select it and press Fix text. A fixed word is underlined with dots; select it and press Restore original to go back. Corrections change the text only; word timings stay untouched, so captions stay in sync.
Corrections apply everywhere the transcript is used: the caption preview, exports, and transcript downloads.
Remove silences and filler words
Open the AI tools tab in the library.
- Remove silences cuts every pause longer than the threshold: between words, and before the first word or after the last. The threshold is adjustable; the default is 800 ms. The tab shows how many it found and how much time they save, and the Words tab marks each silence it takes out.
- Remove filler words cuts the filler words ("um", "uh", and similar) the editor finds. Each one is listed in its line of the script with its own switch: switch one off to keep it, and the rest stay removed. Click a line to play from there.
Silence and filler removal work together with your own trims, and they're saved with the clip: the preview, exports, renders and scheduled posts all apply them. Turn a switch off and your own trims come back as they were.
Move captions and the logo on the video
The video stays clear while you watch. Hover the captions or the logo to outline them, and click to select one: it shows a box, and its settings open in the inspector.
- Drag the selected captions up or down: they snap to the nearest of their five positions, which show faintly while you drag.
- Drag the selected logo to a corner or the center, and drag its corner handle to resize it.
Press Escape or click the bare video to deselect.
The same settings sit in the inspector when you select the captions or the logo, and in the library's Caption presets and Logo tabs.
Add text, shapes, images, video and music
Put your own layers over the clip from the library's Insert tab:
- Text: a title or a label in any font from the font library, with its size, colour, alignment and outline.
- Shapes: a rectangle, an ellipse or a rounded box, filled and outlined, for example behind a title.
- Images: a logo, a sticker or a screenshot you upload.
- Video: a clip you upload, as picture in picture or full-frame b-roll. Its own sound stays off.
- Music or sound: an audio file you upload, played with the clip's sound. Turn it down, or let it duck under speech so the voice stays clear.
Drop a file on its section, browse for one, or pick one you uploaded before. A new layer starts at the playhead and is selected.
Each layer has a track of its own on the timeline. Visual layers draw over the captions and under the logo, the newest on top. Drag a layer along its track to move it in time, or drag its edges to trim it. On the video, drag the selected layer to move it, its corner handle to size it, and the handle above it to rotate it.
The inspector sets the rest: a title's words, font, size, colour, outline and alignment; a shape's fill, corners and outline; size, rotation and opacity; a fade in or out; effects such as a blur or a drop shadow; and a video's fit, with a one-click picture in picture. A visual layer can be cropped to a shape, such as a rounded or round picture in picture. Click the diamond beside size, rotation or opacity to animate it: set it at different points of the playhead and it moves between them, marked with a diamond on its track.
Layers stay with the footage they sit on. When you trim, split or delete a cut, or remove silences and filler words, every layer moves with the video under it. Footage cut from under a layer shortens it, and a layer whose footage is cut out entirely shrinks to the cut point.
Layers show everywhere the clip does: the preview, exports, the share page, renders and scheduled posts.
Uploads
Files you upload are kept for your team, so you can use them again in any of its clips.
| Kind | Formats | Largest | Longest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image | PNG, JPEG or WebP | 10 MB, 4096 pixels a side | |
| Video | MP4 or MOV in H.264 (or VP9 or AV1), 8-bit | 250 MB, 4096 pixels a side | 5 minutes |
| Music or sound | MP3, WAV, or AAC in M4A | 50 MB | 10 minutes |
OpenClip checks each file when its upload finishes and says why when it can't use one. iPhone videos are often HEVC or HDR, which not every browser plays: set the camera to Most Compatible, or export the video as H.264, and upload it again.
Captions
From the library you can pick a caption preset, override its style, set emoji and bangers, or turn captions off. The presets are live previews in your clip's own words, grouped and searchable. On the free plan, the presets it doesn't include show a lock; clicking one offers the upgrade.
Insights
The Insights tab shows the clip's virality score and what drives it, its hook and quote, and ready-made social copy you can copy per platform.
Export and publish
When the clip is ready:
- Export downloads the clip as an MP4. The export renders in your browser and does not use credits.
- Schedule queues the clip for your connected accounts; see social scheduling.
- Share creates a public link from the export menu; see sharing and exporting.
Good to know
- The editor opens rendered clips only. A moment that was detected but not processed into a clip has no editor page.
- Edits are per clip. Restyling one Viral Moment never touches the others.
- The editor is built for a computer screen. On a phone it opens with a note, and you can continue anyway.
