How to Use AI Transcription to Caption Your Videos
Turn spoken words into accurate, word-level captions automatically — no manual typing, no expensive transcriptionists needed.
Prerequisites
- An active OpenClip account (Starter, Pro, or Business plan)
- A video file in MP4, MOV, or another supported format, OR a direct video URL
- Audio that is reasonably clear and free of excessive background noise
Steps
Prepare your video file
Before uploading, make sure your video has clear, audible speech. Remove or minimize background music, echo, or overlapping voices where possible. OpenClip accepts MP4, MOV, and other common formats.
Tip: Videos with a single, close-mic'd speaker produce the highest transcription accuracy. If you recorded with a lapel mic or podcast setup, expect near-perfect results.
Upload your video to OpenClip
Log in to your OpenClip account and drag your video file into the upload area, or paste a direct video URL. OpenClip will begin ingesting the file immediately. Large files may take a few minutes to upload depending on your connection speed.
Tip: For batch workflows, you can upload multiple videos at once. Each video is processed independently and will yield its own transcript.
Let AI transcription run automatically
Once uploaded, OpenClip's AI speech recognition engine analyzes the audio track and generates a full word-level transcript. This process runs in the background — you'll receive a notification when it's complete. Transcription time scales with video length but is typically much faster than real-time.
Tip: OpenClip transcribes at the word level, meaning every single spoken word is timestamped. This is what enables the animated, word-by-word caption highlighting you see in caption presets.
Review and correct the transcript
Open the generated transcript and scan for any errors. Common issues include proper nouns, brand names, technical jargon, and acronyms that the AI may mishear. Click any word to correct it inline. Fixing the transcript here automatically fixes the captions in your exported clips.
Tip: Pay special attention to names of people, products, and places. Even a 98% accurate transcript on a 60-minute video can have dozens of small errors worth fixing.
Choose a caption preset
With your transcript verified, select one of OpenClip's 10 caption presets — Default, Dan, Dan Reveal, Pop, Mozi, Kendrick, Sara, Lucy, Tayo, or Beast. Each preset controls font style, animation, highlighting color, and emoji injection. The transcript powers all of them identically.
Tip: For social media clips, bold animated presets like Beast or Pop tend to drive higher viewer retention because they keep eyes engaged on the text.
Generate and export your clips
After selecting your caption style, use OpenClip's AI Viral Moment Detection to identify the best clip candidates from your transcript, or manually select a time range. Then export in your desired format (9:16 for Shorts/Reels/TikTok). Your captions are burned into the exported video.
Tip: Export in the highest resolution available for your plan. Captions are rendered at full sharpness regardless of resolution setting.
