Understand the basics of video encoding
Video encoding is the process of compressing raw video into a deliverable format using a codec (like H.264 or H.265) and a container (like MP4 or MOV). The codec determines how the video is compressed; the container packages the video and audio together. Choosing the right combination affects file size, quality, and platform compatibility.
Tip: H.264 in an MP4 container is the most universally accepted format across all major social platforms.
Choose the right codec for your use case
H.264 (AVC) is the gold standard for compatibility and is accepted by TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter/X. H.265 (HEVC) offers better compression at the same quality but has limited platform support. VP9 and AV1 are emerging alternatives used by YouTube internally but rarely required for uploads. For short-form social clips, always default to H.264 unless you have a specific reason to use otherwise.

Set your resolution and aspect ratio

Optimize your audio encoding

Normalize your audio levels to around -14 LUFS for streaming platforms and -6 dB peak to avoid distortion. Before committing to a full export, do a quick checklist: confirm the codec is H.264, the container is MP4, resolution matches the target platform, bitrate is set appropriately, audio is AAC at 192kbps or higher, and frame rate matches the source.
