OpenClip + Perplexity MCP Integration
Perplexity supports custom MCP connectors on Pro, Max, and Enterprise plans, which turns a research assistant into a clipping operator: find the video worth repurposing, then submit it to OpenClip and render captioned clips without switching apps. Setup is four short steps.
Prerequisites
- An OpenClip account with an active subscription
- A Perplexity Pro, Max, or Enterprise plan; custom connectors are not available on the free tier
Setup Steps
Open the Connectors settings
In Perplexity, open your Profile, then Settings, then Connectors, and choose "+ Custom connector". Connectors are a paid-plan feature (Pro, Max, or Enterprise), so this page is where you would notice a plan gate.
Add the remote server
Choose Remote as the connector type and paste the OpenClip server URL: https://openclip.app/mcp. It is one static public URL for every account; there is nothing workspace-specific to copy.
Pick OAuth and sign in
Select OAuth as the authentication method and complete the OpenClip sign-in. The OAuth 2.1 grant binds the connector to your account and team with a scoped, revocable token; no API key exists in this flow.
Clip from a thread
Paste a video URL in a thread and ask for clips: Perplexity calls submit_video, polls get_video_status while OpenClip processes, presents the scored moments from list_clips, and renders your picks with render_clip in your chosen caption preset.
Features
Research to clips in one place
Perplexity's strength is finding the source: the talk, the interview, the webinar. With OpenClip connected, the same thread turns the find into captioned clips.
Remote connector, zero install
OpenClip is a hosted streamable-HTTP server, exactly what Perplexity's Remote connector type expects. Nothing runs on your machine.
OAuth sign-in
Authentication is OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration: approve once, revoke any time, no keys to manage.
The full OpenClip pipeline
Moment detection, speaker tracking, and word-level captions run inside OpenClip; Perplexity coordinates with submit_video, list_clips, and render_clip.
Approval-first flow
Perplexity presents the detected moments with virality scores for your judgment and renders only the ones you approve.
Credit visibility
Ask for the balance any time: get_usage reports remaining processing minutes and recent activity before you commit a long recording.
