Chroma key is a visual effects and compositing technique that removes a specific color — most commonly green or blue — from a video frame and replaces it with a different image, video, or virtual background. The process works by selecting a target 'key' color (the 'chroma') and making every pixel of that hue transparent, leaving only the foreground subject visible. The result is then layered over any chosen background. Chroma key is widely used in broadcast television, filmmaking, live streaming, and online video production. The technique requires the subject to be filmed in front of a uniformly lit, solid-colored backdrop — green screens and blue screens are the standard choices because those colors rarely appear in human skin tones, making clean separation easier. Modern software can automate much of the keying process, though the quality of the final composite still depends heavily on lighting consistency, fabric quality, and how close the subject is to the backdrop.
